An Allegory of America
An Allegory of America
2026
Pigment print on etching paper. Edition of 100
Inspired by a print by the Dutch engraver Adriaen
Collaert, this work reimagines the allegorical figure
of America for the 250th anniversary of the United
States. A woman rides a bison, holding a cornucopia
overflowing with American products and achievements,
while farms, industry, and a rocket launch replace the
wilderness of the original image. The border reinterprets
classical figures including Liberty and Fortune through
contemporary symbols of protest and finance, alongside
Bacchus and Vulcan. In the corners, allegories of
morning, noon, dusk, and night depict scenes from
across the nation. Combining historical references with
modern imagery, the work reflects on America’s origins,
achievements, and evolution. Prints of the design have
been gifted to both the official collections of the United
States and the United Kingdom.
