An Arch for the West

An Arch for the West

2026

Pigment print on etching paper. Edition of 100.

An Arch for the West was conceived in early 2025
as a contemporary response to The Triumphal Arch
of Maximilian I, the monumental sixteenth-century
woodcut commissioned by the Holy Roman Emperor
and executed by artists including Albrecht Dürer,
Hans Burgkmair, and Albrecht Altdorfer. Created as an
assertion of political and cultural unity, it offered a visual
account of history, power, and collective identity.
Shifting the subject from ruler to civilization, An Arch for
the West presents the West as a cumulative inheritance
shaped by history, myth, faith, law, art, and institutional
continuity. It argues that this inheritance remains worthy
of monumental artistic treatment.
The project stands against dominant tendencies
in contemporary art that privilege critique and
deconstruction. Without denying complexity or historical
failure, it rejects the idea that civilization should be
understood primarily through criticism. Returning to
narrative, symbolism, and constructive ambition, the
work affirms continuity at a moment when continuity
itself has become contested.
