Square with Falling Statues

Square with Falling Statues

Ink and Digital drawing on German Etching Paper, 2022

Derived from a print by Giovanni Battista Piranesi,
Square with Falling Statues depicts a public square
transformed into a theatre of destruction. Crowds
pull down monuments while fires burn and onlookers
record events with mobile phones, introducing
contemporary imagery into an eighteenth-century
urban setting. Statues, traditionally intended to
commemorate historical figures and collective values,
become targets in conflicts over memory and identity.
By placing scenes of modern unrest within the
framework of a classical cityscape, the artist highlights
recurring patterns in history and the persistent tension
between reverence and rejection. The composition
draws attention to the spectacle of destruction itself,
questioning whether acts intended to erase the
past ultimately become part of that same historical
continuum.
